Commercial platforms worth knowing
Prosumer / Commercial
DJI Air 3S
Why we include it: The Air 3S sits between consumer and enterprise. Its 1-inch CMOS sensor and 4-directional obstacle sensing make it suitable for real estate, events, and content work where the Mavic 3E's price point is hard to justify. Solid Part 107 starter platform.

Enterprise
Autel EVO Max 4T
Why we include it: The EVO Max 4T integrates thermal, wide, zoom, and laser rangefinder in a single payload — relevant for public safety, utility inspection, and search-and-rescue contractors. A meaningful DJI alternative for operators with agency procurement restrictions.

Cameras & Gimbals
Payloads for aerial photography and video
3-Axis Gimbal
DJI RS 4 Pro
Why we include it: For ground-based commercial photography that complements aerial operations. The RS 4 Pro handles cameras up to 4.5 kg, supports vertical shooting natively, and is common on production sets alongside drone coverage.

Accessories
Field-essential add-ons
Power
Anker 767 Power Station
Why we include it: Field charging is often the limiting factor on multi-battery shoots. The 767 outputs enough wattage to fast-charge DJI Mavic batteries simultaneously, extending operational range away from outlets.

Filters
PolarPro ND Filter Set (DJI Mavic 3)
Why we include it: ND filters are not optional for video — without them, the 180-degree shutter rule produces unusable motion blur or requires unsafe shutter speeds. PolarPro's Cinema Series is the reference choice for Mavic platforms.

Transport
Pelican Air 1615 Case
Why we include it: Commercial operators transport expensive equipment to sites with variable conditions. The 1615 Air is TSA-approved, carry-on eligible, and configurable with foam inserts for any drone configuration. Relevant for insured operators who need documented protective storage.

Safety & Compliance
Part 107 operational requirements
Anti-Collision Lighting
Lume Cube Aviation Strobe
Why we include it: Anti-collision lighting is required for civil twilight operations (30 min before sunrise / 30 min after sunset) and night operations under 14 CFR 107.29. The Lume Cube Aviation strobe is visible at 3 statute miles and meets the lighting requirement for most operational contexts.

Study Resources
Part 107 exam preparation
Reference Book
FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
Why we include it: The PHAK is the FAA's own reference for aeronautical knowledge — the same material Part 107 weather, airspace, and performance questions are drawn from. Free as a PDF from FAA.gov; the print edition is useful for annotated study.

Chart Supplement
FAA Chart Supplement (applicable region)
Why we include it: Part 107 knowledge test questions include sectional chart interpretation. Familiarizing yourself with a current chart supplement builds the chart-reading fluency those questions require — especially for airspace boundary questions near airports.

Frequently Asked Gear Questions

Questions Part 107 operators ask about required equipment, regulatory compliance, and operational practice. Always verify current rules at faa.gov.

Do I need Remote ID equipment for every Part 107 flight?
Yes. Remote ID broadcast is required for all Part 107 operations outside of an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA). Either the aircraft must have built-in Remote ID (Standard Remote ID) or carry an approved broadcast module. Operating without Remote ID puts your certificate at risk.
Are anti-collision strobes required for twilight operations?
Yes. 14 CFR 107.29 requires anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles during civil twilight (30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset) and during night operations. The strobe must have a flash rate sufficient to avoid collision with other aircraft.
Why do drone operators use ND filters?
Neutral density filters allow operators to follow the 180-degree shutter rule (shutter speed = 2x frame rate) in bright daylight. Without ND filters, video captured at high shutter speeds has unnatural, staccato motion. Cinematic drone video almost always requires ND filters in daylight conditions.
What gear is actually required by Part 107?
The FAA requires registered aircraft with a legible registration number on the exterior, Remote ID broadcast capability (built-in or module), and anti-collision lighting visible 3 SM for any twilight or night operation. Everything else — ND filters, cases, extra batteries — is operational best practice but not regulated.
Does affiliate revenue affect which products you recommend?
No. MiddAir participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, but gear selections are editorial. Products are chosen for operational relevance to Part 107 commercial work, not commission rates. See our disclosure page for full details.
Are DJI drones still legal to fly commercially in the US?
Yes. As of current regulatory guidance, DJI aircraft remain legal to fly under Part 107 in the United States. Some federal agencies and certain state-level procurement programs restrict DJI on government contracts, but private commercial operators can continue to operate DJI platforms. Always verify current rules at faa.gov before major purchases.
Which drone is best for passing the Part 107 knowledge test?
None — the Part 107 knowledge test is a written exam covering FAA regulations, airspace, weather, and aeronautical decision-making. No drone is required. For practical flying after passing the test, any platform that supports Remote ID, has reliable GPS, and fits your operational use case will work. Our free 375-question quiz covers every subject area tested on the real exam.
